While many of us were fairly disappointed with Crimson Peak from visionary storyteller Guillermo del Toro, there’s no doubt in anyone’s minds he planned on returning to some award worthy work with his next film for Fox. The Shape of Water is his next fairy tale of sorts which follows a very unique romance between a fish man and a deaf woman as they embark on a journey to free both our mysterious new creature and a love that grows between them both.
As far as the trailer goes, it’s definitely a del Toro movie. The color pallet is bold and beautiful and fuses new age film-making with foreign film-making of the past with a period piece vibe to it. I still think this creature design is awfully close to Abe Sapian from Hellboy, but that’s not a bad thing if you ask me. My first reaction to when the music came on was that this could be a great example of how well del Toro do on a Bioshock movie if he was ever so inclined.
With this film getting the top prize at the Venice Film Festival along with numerous other nominations, there’s no surprise that this film has the buzz that it does. Hopefully people go out and support this flick which was co-written by del Toro and Vanessa Taylor who’s written for HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones during Season 2. The Shape of Water hits theaters December 8th, 2017.
