Jaume Collet-Serra sounds like he will be the new frontrunner to direct Suicide Squad 2. Warner Bros. and DC have name dropped some incredibly bizarre, but noteworthy options to direct the sequel to their villain centric film with the weirdest name being Mel Gibson.

From what we’ve heard in the past, beyond Mel Gibson supposedly being the guy the studio really wanted, they have had more horror directors mentioned overall. Horror directors are easily some of the coolest choices when it comes to jumping into the superhero game simply because they know how to work with a little to tell a compelling, visually focused story that both lend incredibly well to what is often effects heavy drama when we’re talking about comic book characters.

We all knew there was going to be a sequel to the film whether you liked it or not simply because we all knew it would make money – $745.6 million to be exact. While The Shallows wasn’t a surprise hit like everyone hoped it would be, there’s a lot to appreciate about the film also. Clearly the director was able to get a lot out of Blake Lively and also managed to create a fairly suspenseful shark movie out of minimal budget and minimal plot beyond it being contained on a rock for most of its run-time so you can see where there’s growth to be gained if hired on.

Two other names mentioned once Gibson declined the job due to script delays, names such as Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) and Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies) were possible choices as well, two young directors who’ve made their biggest films off of horror comedy, a combination that fits perfectly with tropes of Suicide Squad.

Collet-Serra’s resume pretty much prepared him to be hired on for Suicide Squad when you think about it. His work House of Wax (2005) and Orphan (2009), two pretty fun horror flicks for even me, as well as the Liam Neeson action films Unknown, Non-Stop, and Run All Night. Having action and horror as your two genres of focus would definitely make you the top candidate in a heartbeat if I was a producer.
