I don’t think you’re going to find a more visually flawless trailer and soon to be film than the latest Blade Runner 2049 by Arrival and Sicario director Denis Villenueve. With Roger Deakins, the cinematographer behind most of your favorite movies, giving us his iconic silhouettes and color pallets for the film, this is looking like the film to hone in once it comes out.
Villenueve may not have the clout like the names Scorsese, Spielberg, or Tarantino, but the man is carving out an absolutely astounding legacy already and could be considered one of the top directors working today, period. I can’t say I’m a huge Blade Runner fan like many people are, but I appreciate the film like I do The Beatles. It’s impact on film making is no secret and it proved Ridley Scott is a director to be reckoned with. Now that we have a character driven trailer for the sequel, we finally see Gosling and Ford on screen together with dialogue.
I don’t know much about the plot, but that’s what kind of excites me about the trailer. While it didn’t tell me much beyond the hunt for replicants still ongoing, I’m curious about the dynamic of these characters and where their journey leads them all. The cast is terrific, the director is batting one hundred, and the Hall of Fame cinematographer has brought his A-game per usual. What’s there not to be excited about?
