Guillermo del Toro is back with an original fantasy-adventure film that he has titled The Shape of Water that will star Sally Hawkins, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Doug Jones, Lauren Lee Smith, Michael Stuhlbarg and Octavia Spencer for Fox Searchlight. The Cold War era “other worldly fairy tale” will be set in 1963 that has Hawkins as the lead.
Hawkins plays an employee at a top secret government facility where she discovers one of the top secret experiments going on at the facility alongside her co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer). The secret? An “aquatic man” who will be played by Doug Jones (Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth), an underrated physically gifted character actor, and muse of del Toro’s will be the aquatic man.
Del Toro has written the script alongside Vanessa Taylor. His work on Crimson Peak was noted as being a beautifully captured haunted house story, but left out a compelling story. Del Toro has the originality down packed, but he can sometimes falter in narrative due to his astounding work on visuals which tend to overshadow what are cool stories.
The film gets an Oscar friendly release date of December 8, 2017 which may serve as good counter programming for Star Wars this year.
