When director James Gunn was able to tell the media why super-villain Thanos was not going to be in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, it shed some light on what seems to be an issue for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s films. While we’ve all grown to love the heroes and the actors who play them, their villains haven’t lasted long enough to make an impact on us as an audience beyond the fun that Loki always brings us. Expect that to change with Infinity War when it hits theaters.
Directed by the Russo brothers who did Captain America: Winter Solider and the sequel Civil War, they have the task to bring in pretty much every MCU hero we have seen thus far and match them up against this universe’s most powerful villain and the villain will be front and center as the main character.
Many lucky journalists got the chance to interview Feige on the set of Guardians last April with Feige giving these comments about the MCU’s villains:
“Well, I mean, it always varies, but it always starts with what serves the story the most and what serves the hero the most. We’ve been criticized, if a big criticism of ours is that we focus on the heroes more than the villains, I think that’s probably true. I don’t think it will always be true and I think some of you spoke to Chris and Steve at the Civil War junket. When the heck was that, yesterday? Last week? And they talked about, in appropriately oblique terms, Thanos. Thanos in Infinity War is, you know, in a movie that has a lot of characters, you could almost go so far as to say he is the main character, and that’s a bit of a departure from what we’ve done before, but that was appropriate for a movie called Infinity War.”
What ways Thanos gets to be the titular character remains to be seen, but regardless of how much he is shown or not, his presence will be felt and his story will clearly be the driving force for the whole film. This makes sense, the intergalactic tyrant has been on a search for the Infinity Gems that have popped up in nearly all the films thus far and when he gets them he will be nearly unstoppable, but the question becomes how does he get them?
