It seemed like the sequel to David Fincher’s American version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo was all, but dead in the water. Daniel Craig wanted too much money and schedules had to be constantly adjusted only for Fincher to start to lose hope and just move on. Poor Rooney Mara could only wait in the wings until someone decided to greenlight the film. Fast forward five years later and they have locked in another grimly talented director in Fede Alverez.
The Don’t Breathe and Evil Dead director has been signed on to continue the story as well as skip two of the books and jump directly to the fourth installment of the Millenium book series and produce the story within The Girl In the Spider Web. The Swedish versions of the original trilogy based off of author Stieg Larsson’s novels are already films in Larsson’s home country of Hungry starring Noomi Rapace.
Nothing has been confirmed by the studios, but in recent press junkets with Alverez for his blu-ray release of Don’t Breathe, the director also mentioned how he will be working on Spider’s Web as well as a sequel to his horror hit Don’t Breathe which would bring back Stephen Lang’s Blind Man. It seems like the director will at least be fairly busy making a name for himself in the coming years and we can only wait and see what will happen with the cast which likely won’t bring back a majority of it’s original members.
