The 19 year old actress has made a name for herself in being one of the best young talents in Hollywood while taking on roles that most young people aren’t capable of doing, but it appears Moretz is in need of a change or break from the Hollywood scene for the time being.
She was scheduled to star in a live-action version of the classic tale that is The Little Mermaid that Universal had planned, but Moretz has since dropped out of the role among her other commitments. Whether she was right to not at least do these few films and then take a break is not really the most logical question to ask and to be fair, movies lose talent all the time and they know how to handle it. It’s a shame Moretz won’t be seen on the silver screen any time soon, but you have to respect the young woman for making a bold and committed decision.
Her reasoning for dropping the roles may hit some of you the wrong way, but I think it’s a courageous and bold movie for someone who wants to help herself while she’s young in order to keep a steady career as well as a stable life for herself as she hopes to be able to specify her craft in the future. Her interview with E! quoted her stating; “Why not sit back, slow down, realize I’m 19 and go, ‘Hey, let’s make stuff that really, really hits hard with who I am and helps me figure out what it means to be a 19-year-old actor who is just doing her thing?’,”, and to be fair, if she’s that ahead with the understanding of what roles she’s played then playing a half fish humanoid creature with real weird self esteem makes sense to turn down after awhile.
If you’re an artist you can’t force something that isn’t there and I think it’s wise of her to understand that she’d rather take on roles where she is able to really sink her teeth into them instead being the generic young actress some have started making her become. Growth in one’s self translates in art while art imitates life and it’s showing itself clearly with Moretz. We just hope we see her sooner than later in some more interesting roles.
