The story of Nat Turner may or may not be told in a light that some “Americans” will like, but controversy breeds discussion… most of the time. The one discussion people at Sundance this year had was the directorial debut of actor, writer, producer Nate Parker, and the crowning achievement he has created.
A literate slave brought on by white slave owners to calm down revolting black slaves is frustrating just to type, but don’t expect this revenge (some say justified) filled film to be a Quentin Tarantino flick, and while Django Unchained is one of my all time favorites, this is not that. This looks powerful and gripping and all too real. From the trailers alone, this deserves the award buzz it garnered in Utah and more.
The only issue I had with this trailer was the pop music scoring the scenes. Having “Strange Fruit” by Billie Holiday – but the version in the trailer was Nina Simone – play in the teaser was bone chilling. This should be a good one.
