It seems we have found our new pairing of actor and director and it comes in the shape of Prisoners and Sicario director Denis Villenueve and his muse Jake Gyllenhaal. The pair has worked on two movies prior that include Prisoners and the psychological mind eff-word that is Enemy.
The Son will be a crime thriller adapted from Jo Nesbo’s book of the same name and follows a 15 year old boy whose promising wrestling career comes short when his cop father commits suicide. This boy then ends up prison with a serious drug problem only to create a brilliant escape and search for clues as to what really happened to his father.
Gyllenhaal will play that troubled boy and will lead a prison break film that hopefully feels as gritty as Villenueve’s other films and he continues to grow. Villenueve will also be directing the upcoming Blade Runner sequel which will bring back Harrison Ford and bring on Ryan Gosling, Robin Wright, and Dave Bautista.
Gyllenhaal has become one of the understated actors of his generation and transforms in every role like the best method actors before him and will likely undergo some serious transformations yet again to look like a strung out prisoner with too much time on his hands. Let’s just hope he steers clear of the drugs though.
