Gambit starring Channing Tatum has gone through a revolving door of possible directors and they have most likely found their guy. Coming off of the critically acclaimed Edge of Tomorrow/Live.Die.Repeat starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, it appears director Doug Liman will be the man to helm the FOX property and X-Men favorite.
Liman has been one of the many under the radar directors working today who has provided some quality pictures in the realms of action films such as Mr. and Mrs. Smith, The Bourne Identity, Edge of Tomorrow, and was the director for the cult classic Swingers.
The big fear here is not relevant to his talent and skills behind a camera, but the studio itself. FOX has become a studio that is under endless fire for not letting their directors make the projects they want and it has churned out some ugly products, some that didn’t even look finished (Fan4stic) and then we had less than stellar films like Wolverine: Origins that gets more laughs from it than they may have liked. There seems to be too many chefs in the kitchen over at 20th Century Fox for my liking to be overly excited and it doesn’t seem to be getting fixed.
Hopefully the script is great and Liman can bring his flair to the film and the film comes out like we all hope.
