The director carousal that is going on for the eighth installment of the Fast and Furious franchise could be trimming down their candidates to four people. The list includes Louis Leterrier (The Transporter), Adam Wingard (The Guest), William Eubank (this guy’s resume is still green), and F. Gary Gray of Straight Outta Compton fame.
All these men have my curiosity for sure because of the styles they can bring to the film with Eubank being one I know little to nothing about. Leterrier seems to be like he’d be the safest pick with his films including The Transporter 1&2 and films like Clash of the Titans, but it’s the additions of F. Gary Gray and Adam Wingard that catch my eyes.
Straight Outta Compton is probably one of the better movies of the year and Gray has clearly proven he can work with ensembles and his fit in a world full of street races and action could be right up his alley with his past films also including The Italian Job and Law Abiding Citizen. He can do action and tell a compelling story and that is what is likely making him the top guy for the studio, but Wingard’s skills tend to lie in the suspense/horror/thriller genres and it makes me wonder what they are trying to accomplish with his skill set.
Whoever they pick, at least we know Vin Diesel isn’t going to direct like he said on that Facebook post recently, but my hopes and bets go for the two that have made the most quality films and that goes to either Gray or Wingard.
