DISCLAIMER: THESE ARE MERELY RUMORS AND LOOSE SPECULATION, NOTHING HAS BEEN CONFIRMED.
Now, Den of Geek is reporting that Christopher Nolan could be connected to this delayed live-action telling of the famed anime film and manga of the same name. Akira is arguably one of the most influential anime’s of all time and regarded as one of the most influential anime films of it’s time, ushering in an age where anime showed how much of a spectacle it can be.
But like dust in the wind, the speculation of a live-action telling of the film has been swirling since 2002 with later years attaching high profile actors for roles in the film such as; Keanu Reeves, Zac Efron, Garrett Hedlund, and Gary Oldman to name a few.
Warner Bros. has the rights to the film and would be distributing the project, and with their latest golden boy Chris Nolan being their clear money maker (and great director), it would make sense for him to be attached to the film in some way. Rumors are saying that WB could be planning a trilogy of films for Akira but nothing has since been confirmed.
News with Nolan a week ago had Warner Bros. announcing his next unknown film was to be released in the summer of 2017. Could this be Akira? Anything is possible, but even if a director other than Nolan took the reigns and Nolan just produced, this could be good news for the film moving forward. Sons of Anarchy screenwriter Marco J. Ramirez has been rumored to write the script for the film, but no confirmation has been explored to see if he is still attached.
Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company is still attached to produce the film, who knows if he is still going to somehow star in the film one way or another. I’m not sure I can see Nolan doing another trilogy that isn’t an original idea of his, but his name holds weight to this story if he is directing or not.
Either way, we can only hope this film becomes more than fiction and gets the talent it deserves and requires to make it a reality.
